7 days • Birdsville, QLD return • Suitable for Trailers
This tour is the perfect introduction to Simpson Desert travel, giving you a genuine desert experience in just 7 days and without the commitment of a full west–east or east–west crossing. Ideal for first-time desert travellers, those who want to experience a variety of desert tracks, families, or anyone wanting to build skills and confidence before tackling one of our full expeditions.
Simpson Desert Preview is your gateway to one of Australia’s greatest remote-area adventures. Starting and finishing in Birdsville, this 7-day loop delivers a curated selection of the Simpson’s most memorable features — from the rolling eastern dunes to Poeppel Corner, salt lakes, and classic Simpson Desert tracks.
This tour is designed for travellers who want a true desert experience without the longer commitment of a full crossing. You’ll learn how to best drive the sand dunes, manage remote travel, set up desert camps, and navigate the unique terrain of the Simpson — all under professional guidance.
It’s the perfect stepping stone: challenging enough to be rewarding, accessible enough for newcomers, and structured to build the skills and confidence needed for our full Simpson Desert (West to East), Simpson Desert (East to West), Madigan Line, or Ultimate Desert Adventure expeditions.
If you’ve always wanted to explore the Simpson Desert but weren’t sure where to start, the Simpson Desert Preview is your ideal first chapter.
Drivers: This tour is suitable for all levels of off-road driving experience. The outback and desert tracks will excite experienced off-road drivers. For those new to off-road driving, the advice and tuition provided by your experienced guide will ensure you are prepared to safely tackle even the most difficult sections of the tour.
Vehicles: Vehicles require dual range, all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres, and rated recovery points front and rear (a 50mm heavy duty tow point is suitable at the rear). A raised clearance and a snorkel are recommended. You will need to carry enough fuel for 660km range (factor in low range, the terrain, and if you intend to tow) as it will be at least 600km between fuel stops.
Camping: All 4x4 Explore tours are suitable for tents, swags, roof-top tents, tray-mounted campers, etc.
Towing: This tour is suitable for single axle off-road trailers, camper trailers and caravans, however, the nature of the desert tracks require capable towing and towed vehicles. Towed items must be built for off-road towing, have suitable clearance and all-terrain tyres. Some off-road trailers, camper trailers and caravans will not be appropriate. 4×4 Explore will assess trailer suitability for the tour on a case-by-case basis. If you would like to tow, please discuss with us before booking.
