Canning Stock Route 2026

from $1,947.00

Mon 13 April – Sun 3 May 2026 • 21 days, 20 nights • Wiluna WA to Halls Creek WA • Suitable for Trailers

The Canning Stock Route is widely regarded as the longest and most remote 4WD track in Australia. Take on the challenge of the Canning in 2026 with our Limited Edition Canning Stock Route tour.

The Canning Stock Route or CSR was surveyed by Alfred Canning in 1906 with 51 wells constructed over two years from March 1908 to April 1910. Stretching some 1,850km, the CSR provided a way of moving beef cattle south to markets. The CSR is now widely regarded as the longest, most remote, and most challenging 4WD track in Australia. Our 2026 Canning Stock Route tour, starting at Wiluna and finishing 21 days later at Halls Creek, will let you make the most of this amazing experience, in safety and with none of the planning hassle.

  • If you prefer to commence your tour in Alice Springs, we will link up at 9:00am on Wed 8 April. After a quick briefing, we will depart to the west. We will visit the impressive Gosse Bluff, where you will stand in the centre of the remnant crater from the impact of a 600m wide comet approximately 150 million years ago. On this first night, a site at Discovery Resorts – Kings Canyon is included, and you will have the opportunity in the morning for one or more of the spectacular canyon walks. Over the next few days we will see Uluru and Kata Tjuta, visit Surveyor Generals Corner, and stop at remote outposts on the Gunbarrel Highway and Great Central Road as we make our way to Wiluna. We will arrive in Wiluna on the afternoon of Sun 12 April with time to resupply and explore the town. A site at the Wiluna Caravan Park is included in your tour.

The CSR tour will link up at Wiluna Caravan Park at 3:00pm on Mon 13 April. After a tour brief there will be time to explore the town or do a final resupply. A site at the Wiluna Caravan Park is included in the tour price. The next day, our CSR experience begins. As we make our way north, we will visit as many of the wells and waterholes that made up the stock route as allowed by the track conditions and restrictions at the time.

This southern section of the track, traversing the Little Sandy Desert and up to the Gibson Desert, is characterised by rocky flats of mulga and spinifex. It is at least 870km from Wiluna to the next available fuel, so you will need to carry enough fuel for 950km range. This is the longest distance between fuel, so the ability to carry enough fuel for 950km will get you through the CSR. Past Kunawarritji and Well 33, the CSR becomes more challenging with some 1,000 sand dunes to cross as we traverse the Great Sandy Desert.

There will be three scheduled ‘no drive’ days with two nights at some great camping spots, allowing time for rest, washing, vehicle maintenance and sight seeing. As examples, the first is planned for Durba Spring near Well 17, and the third is planned for Stretch Lagoon towards the north end of the CSR. These scheduled ‘no drive’ days provide flexibility should our itinerary need to be adjusted for any reason. After departing Stretch Lagoon, it is only half a day to Halls Creek. The tour will arrive at our release point in Halls Creek early afternoon on Sunday 3 May, so you will have plenty of time to settle into your chosen accommodation, or to start your journey home.
